No one is feeling particularly qualified right now...

We're finding it harder than usual to (try and) predict the future. At the moment, even scientists, governments and think tank specialists don't really know what's going to happen.

And in the absence of very clear guidance on what's likely to happen further than a few weeks into the future, it looks like we're managing uncertainty for a while longer.

As well as unsettling people in all the ways we've already talked about, a new thought struck me this week - the current situation is making people feel under qualified.

I'm hearing a lot of people who feel like they ‘should be doing better,’ which makes me think there's a confidence crisis looming.

Why is this happening?

  • We're alone with our own thoughts more. Some of the thought loops we're most addicted to (often along the lines of 'not good enough') have more space to play than usual

  • When other people are wrapped up in their own heads, they may be providing less validation to us than we're used to

  • We have set unreasonably high expectations for ourselves and what we 'should' achieve each week

  • We're frustrated that 2020 has thwarted some of our carefully laid plans (new jobs, holidays, exams etc)

One way to combat this is to double down on future proofing our soft skills like creativity, flexibility, assessing options, ability to adapt to change, curating hope, leadership, emotional intelligence. I could go on. Consider the skills you could invest in now, that can only be helpful to you when you've got clearer sight of what's ahead.

If it's not in the list above, what is it in your field that would make the difference?

We can still invest in ourselves - because that action CREATES confidence. Confidence is an outcome. Hit comment and let me know which skill you'll be focussing on.

P.S.  Now is a good time to double-down on soft skills. Rather than trying to predict a complicated future, distil it down to a couple of skills you KNOW it's worth your time to invest in.

P.P.S.  There's 2 ways you can currently work with me: 1) a 2 hour breakthrough NLP session or 2) a 4 session coaching programme over 2 months. All phone based. When you're ready, hit reply and we'll agree which approach best serves your goal.
