It's not all about work...

I’ve been sharing lots of career advice recently so this week want to take a step back and have a broader conversation.

We all have things going on outside of work that affect how we show up at work, so it’s impossible to deal with our careers in isolation.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m trying to move house. We started thinking about this in February and just exchanged last week (sold our place). Woohoo for achieving step 1!! But we still need to find the right house to buy so won’t have a ‘home’ for a while yet. This has taken 7 months and counting...

Whilst I haven't spent the whole 7 months obsessing about houses, the niggling thought of moving has been fairly constant in the back of my mind. This has made me reflect that there's always distractions and that you may be handling far more challenging situations like bereavements, illnesses, or redundancy.

It's not always about striving, pushing and building our careers - we often have other priorities.

There's a reflection exercise that you may find helpful - I expect you’ve heard of a life wheel? There are lots of templates on google. The idea is to ‘rate’ different aspects of your life from 1-10 so that you can visually see and prioritise areas you’d like to change in Q4.

Career is just one area- others include romantic relationships, friends, family, health, finances and personal growth.

So this week I'd encourage you to take a step back (I will be) and look at these areas of your life. Decide where you want to take action or seek support.

When I'm speaking with clients, we cover all these areas. To have a successful career we need you to be the best you. So sometimes that means putting other areas of your life first.

Interested to hear where you're at with this, hit reply and let me know. Or share any house move stories!

Wishing you all the best

Kat

P.S. It's not all about your career. This week we're checking in with our broader lives to re-focus and prioritisethe areas we want to act on.
