Who are you?

It's a big question. And one that I've been working on for the last few months as part of an extra coaching qualification I'm taking.

I had to write a 3000 word essay on the topic of 'who am I?' - reflecting on how my answer to this might influence my coaching. It created more impact on me than I expected and I thought you might enjoy unearthing some insight into this question yourself.

The better we know ourselves, the easier it is to make aligned decisions - from short term straightforward decisions to the more life changing ones. So here is a super simple process to kick off your personal enquiry:

1) Write the question 'who am I' at the top of a page.
Set a timer for 1 minute and write as much as you can. If you run out of steam, ask yourself the question again and keep writing. Now read what you've got so far.
At this stage it's common to list surface level facts about ourselves like who's important to us, where we live.

2) Set a timer for 1 minute. And continue answering the same question without repeating any of your previous answers.
You have to seek out something different to say about yourself.

3) Go again one more time. One minute. No repetition allowed.

By round 3 you should have some juicy points about yourself.

Another way you can delve into the 'who am I' question is to reflect on what other people would say. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment and write what they would say about you. You can go a step further and actually ask other people what words they'd use to describe you.

Simple ideas like this, executed well, can help bring clarity to anything you're facing. Whether that's 'what activities can I do in lockdown that make me happy' through to 'what career options can I explore'.

Create some time and space for yourself and get reflecting!

P.S. 'Who am I' is a big question that many people underinvest in - be brave and go unearth answers.
